Barrie Kolstein schreibt an Bill-Evans-Experten Win Hinkle: “The Bass will be recorded for the first time since the Vanguard album. I have agreed to have Marc Johnson utilize the bass for several cuts on his new album, which will be a tribute album to Bill Evans. As we all know Marc was the last bassist to be a member of the Bill Evan’s Trio and I could not ask for a better situation to have the Bass be recorded again. Marc is a fantastic player, and individual and truly has a deep seated respect and love for all that Scotty accomplished in his life. I am deeply honored to have Marc utilize the bass and it is my pleasure to donate the services of the bass for use on the album. (..) Jack Frisch who brought the bass to Avatar Recording Studios to Marc for me, is a Web designer and photographer. He is documenting the recording session and actually stopped in front of the Village Vanguard before he went to Avatar Studios and photographed the Bass ( in the trunk in his car) in front of the Vanguard… I think this was such a nice thing to do to bring the bass back to the Vanguard, before it was once again recorded … definitely good Karma for this entire project.”
